It seems that the 2012-2013 Fayette County Public Schools calendar
forgot to include Christmas in their newest edition. Changing the week and a
half leading into the New Year from “Christmas Break” to “Winter Break” was
concerning enough, but completely neglecting to include a holiday as
significant as Christmas? That’s blasphemy! I understand the desire for separation
of church and state. I’m not saying that Christian holidays should be the only
holidays included on the county school calendar; it just seems like more work
to delete every pre-existent religious holiday rather than adding a few more. I
understand that if Christmas were the only religious holiday on the calendar, a
darling Jewish child, for example, might get upset. Well what about Grandparent’s
Day, which is still included? A child with the recent death of a grandparent
might get their feelings hurt by this.
To solve this issue of what holidays should and shouldn't be
included on the calendar, I propose that no holidays be identified! Instead,
the FCPS calendar can only include dates for important school-related functions
such as School Board Action Meetings and the suggested dates for report cards
to be sent home. That way no one can possibly get offended by the recognition
of a holiday they don’t celebrate! Christmas may not be on the calendar but
gosh darn it, at least “Walk to School Day” would still be!
