What does "hipster" mean to you?
While I'm sure Urban Dictionary has some detailed, convoluted definition of the word hipster, I will attempt to offer a more broad, universal definition. The hipster is not, contrary to popular belief (and by popular belief I mean the assumptions of people over the age of 40) simply a trendy person, nor certainly a modern rendition of the hippie. From my perspective, a hipster is someone who pursues interests and has taste that is uniquely their own and is not motivated by trends or the interests and tastes of others. As a result of this, the hipster is often seen as "liking things before they were cool," simply because they, say, listen to a certain band before it's popular because they like it. Although the term hipster has become stigmatized as a part of pop culture, I think pursuing life as "the hipster" does is one of the purest ways of living. It is the belief in being true to oneself and not simply following the crowd.
