A World in Pictures: Grace Goulson

On the morning of December 7, 1941, not one person on the US Naval Base of Pearl Harbor was expecting a surprise attack from the Japanese. But it happened, killing over 2400 American people and directly leading to US involvement in World War II. One could say the tragedies of that day can almost be equated to that devastating day 12 years ago when our great nation was again attacked by another country. In a similar way to how Arabs were discriminated after 9/11, thousands of innocent Japanese Americans were rounded up and sent to internment camps, their lives shattered by a nation filled with suspicion and panic. Immediately following the fact, 1940s America was sent into hysteria, and just a day later, the US formally entered the war, both on the Pacific and European fronts. The profound effect of this attack cannot be overstated as it changed the course of our country and of the world.
