For the Love and Hate of Television: Joseph Grigsby

I think that in the end, television does provide a good form of entertainment, and is only looked down upon when it is substituted for pure reality. Television gives a good break from the tough parts of life, and helps introduce us to new ideas, new ways to solve problems, and new ways to relate to the world around us. When television is balanced with our time schedules, it allows for us to experience the world through the eyes of other beings, and ultimately become gates to satisfy our various pleasures, when we can't otherwise. It is obviously bad when it takes over people's lives and introduces us to mundane materialism, but otherwise it can help us to learn new things and take pauses between the boring parts of life. It is only an inane use of time when we let it be, and when we let it consume us, but that usually never happens anyway.
