This photograph was taken at the Vatican in Rome, by a
couple of teenagers, using a smartphone, and is a so-called "selfie,"
the first one to ever include a Pope. The teenagers were there for a meeting
with the Pope, a sort of youth day. Before the photo was taken, the young
people had given the Pope a framed illustration of Jesus with a crown of thorns
on his head. The Pope has made it clear that he wants to focus on the young
people of the church, among a few other things, and what better way to reach
out to the young people, especially the teenagers,
than through social media? I'm sure the person who took this picture felt very
special to be taking a picture with the Pope, let alone to be in his very
presence. This picture is so shocking because in the past, Popes have been very
regal people, but Pope Francis has just done a very humble thing, by Papal
standards.
