Good vs. Evil -Olivia Dixon

From a religious standpoint, there is a clear distinction between good and evil. God is good (SO GOOD) and Satan is evil. The Bible makes this separation clear especially in 1 John 1:5 which states, “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” A metaphor, yes, but definitely not a hyperbole. This verse is saying that God is good and because he is good, he cannot be evil.

I do not believe that certain people are born evil; instead, everyone is born into a sinful world so being a sinner is inevitable. Sometimes Satan tempts us with things that appear “good,” but only provide us with short-term happiness. The real satisfaction comes from obeying God’s commands, which are clearly good. While our world (the media and social norm) might be centered on the bad, God created these commands so that we would obey them and therefore, live out our lives to the fullest.

Good and evil are nouns and both exist in the world. Romans 12:21 is one of my favorite verses because it encourages us to be aware of these powers and to strive to avoid tempting evils. It boldly states, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
